The #nomakeupselfie hashtag was started by an 18 year old woman, and not directly by the charity, as she had lost several family members and friends to the disease.
The response was amazing and saw many take to Facebook to show off their bare faces and then request that friends and family members do the same as well as making a donation. The total raised in just over a week sits at £8 million, funds which will be used to fund ten clinical trials, which were due to be postponed due to limited funds.
The past week has seen other hashtags evolving to try and raise money for other charities too.
It has also been reported that other charities have seen a small rise in donations due to user error, texting the word “bear” instead of “beat” means you adopt a polar bear from the WWF.
