Meta - are they renaming Facebook

Meta, the new name for Facebook, or is it? The news that Mark Zuckerberg is changing the name of Facebook has caused some confusion for users. Many took to the social media platform, Facebook, to express their dismay and confusion about changing the website and app’s name to Meta.

Meta, I prefer Facebook!

But don’t panic, it’s just the parent company changing its name. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Workplace and Oculus will remain as is current, but will now be owned by Meta, whereas before the parent company was also called Facebook.

Why rename the parent company to Meta?

The change will help reduce confusion as the company expands and it helps them align with their future goals as a business. It is believed the new “Meta” name is taken from the Greek translation meaning “beyond”. It also comes from the idea of the Metaverse which is believed by Facebook/Meta to be the next big push in technology.

What’s the Metaverse?

The goal of the company is to create and advance the technology to connect business and individuals. Mark Zuckerberg claims that the Metaverse will be a fully immersive and embodied experience. He continues to explain that you will be able to do anything you can imagine, get together with friends and family, work, learn, play, shop and create. Not only this, but he envisages entirely new categories, that we may not have even thought of yet.
